Bentley has announced a significant adjustment to its electrification strategy, deciding to develop pure internal combustion engine versions for its next-generation Bentayga, Continental GT, and Flying Spur models. This move marks a reversal from its previous "electric-only" plan for these flagship vehicles and reflects a broader trend of automakers recalibrating their electric vehicle transitions.
The strategic shift is largely influenced by decisions within the Volkswagen Group, particularly from sibling brands Porsche and Audi. Last week, Porsche committed to investing €31 billion (approximately $33 billion) to extend the lifecycle of its combustion engine models and canceled its planned all-electric "K1" flagship. This follows Audi's decision last year to abandon its target of selling only electric vehicles from 2033.
The interconnectedness of these brands means platform, powertrain, and component sharing directly affects Bentley's product roadmap. "Decisions at Porsche and Audi directly impact Bentley," confirmed CEO Frank-Steffen Walliser.
Strategic adjustment but electrification continues
Despite this pivot, Bentley remains committed to its electrification journey. The company still plans to launch one new plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle annually starting in 2026, with its first all-electric model positioned as an "urban SUV".
The decision to retain pure combustion engine options primarily responds to continued demand in key markets like North America and the Middle East, where customer acceptance of electric vehicles hasn't reached levels sufficient to support a fully electric strategy.
Bently had previously delayed its full electrification target from 2030 to 2035 under its "Beyond100" strategy. The latest adjustment further demonstrates the company's flexible approach to balancing ambitious sustainability goals with current market realities and customer preferences.
