BMW M to Simplify Model Variants

    In a recent development, BMW M division plans to streamline its product lineup. Future M models will be offered in only three variants: Standard, CS, and CSL. While this move appears to eliminate the Competition edition, it essentially repositions the Competition as the new base model.

    Although not yet officially confirmed, Frank van Meel, CEO of BMW M GmbH, revealed that among previously launched M models, 80% of customers chose the Competition version. Consequently, the division has decided to establish it as the standard offering. This means future M models will start at a more performance-oriented level, while still offering both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive options for consumers.

    Reports indicate that BMW will launch the new M2 and M5 in 2026, which will adopt the Competition edition as the standard version. This strategy will then be applied to subsequent models. For reference, the current BMW M2 is equipped with a 3.0T inline-six engine producing a maximum power of 353 kW, while the BMW M5 features a 4.4T V8 engine with a maximum power of 441 kW.
